Lenin sull’indipendenza dell’Ucraina

A proposito delle più o meno fantasiose ricostruzioni sull’atteggiamento dei rivoluzionari bolscevichi sulla questione ucraina, pubblichiamo alcuni stralci da un articolo di Lenin apparso sulla Pravda del 28 giugno 1917

[…] Nessun democratico, tanto meno un socialista, oserà contestare la piena legittimità delle richieste ucraine. Nessun democratico, allo stesso modo, può negare il diritto dell’Ucraina di separarsi liberamente dalla Russia: è proprio il riconoscimento incondizionato di questo diritto, ed esso solo, che rende possibile la campagna per la libera unione degli ucraini e dei grandi russi, per l’unione volontaria dei due popoli in un unico stato. Solo il riconoscimento senza riserve di questo diritto può effettivamente, per sempre e completamente rompere con il maledetto passato zarista, che ha fatto di tutto per rendere i popoli così vicini tra loro per lingua, territorio, carattere e storia. Lo zarismo maledetto fece dei Grandi Russi i carnefici del popolo ucraino, alimentando sistematicamente l’odio verso coloro che arrivavano a impedire ai bambini ucraini di parlare la loro lingua madre e di studiare in essa.

La democrazia rivoluzionaria della Russia deve, se vuole essere veramente rivoluzionaria, se vuole essere una vera democrazia, rompere con questo passato, riconquistare per sé e per gli operai e i contadini della Russia la fiducia fraterna degli operai e dei contadini dell’Ucraina. Questo non può essere raggiunto senza riconoscere nella loro integrità i diritti dell’Ucraina, compreso il diritto alla libera separazione.

Non siamo a favore dei piccoli Stati. Siamo per la più stretta unione dei lavoratori di tutti i paesi contro i capitalisti, dei “loro” capitalisti e di quelli di tutti i paesi in generale. È precisamente per fare di questa unione un’unione liberamente consentita che l’operaio russo, non fidandosi neanche per un minuto né della borghesia russa né di quella ucraina, è attualmente a favore del diritto di separazione dagli ucraini, non volendo imporre loro la sua amicizia, ma conquistare la loro trattandoli da pari, da alleati, da fratelli nella lotta per il socialismo. […]
